18_28 Fort Bragg Pine Barrens, Mendocino County. - Pinus contorta, small trees 4 ft. high to 25 ft. high. The taller ones rough barked just as in typical beach pine. - Pinus Muricata, typical but small trees. - Cupressus Goveniana. Many trees 2 to 4 feet high fruiting. One tree fruiting at 1 ft. where soil samples taken. Two soil samples taken. One at three inches below the surface and containing more or less surface organic matter. 18_29 August 10 [?], 1907. the soft sandstone came in and it was impossible to get through it with a spade. I notice this sandstone substratum cropping near the surface in many places. It may account partially for the dwarfing. Also for the overthrowing by the wind of the larger Pinus contorta trees. Many Gowen Cypress shrubs, or rather most, were 6 to 15 feet high. I saw poles unbranched 22 feet high. I also saw two trees in a swale not obviously different: they were 75 feet high, one 8 ft 6 in. circumference at 4 ft., the other 8 ft. 2 in. circumference at 4 ft. The |
