Red Mt. circa 3000 ft. alt.
Sometimes in these young areas will be small compact islands of old trees (10 to 14 ft. h.) Where I stand now on s. side of mountain areas of both young and old nearly pure -- a small admixture of manzanita Old trees usually becoming flat-headed at about 11 or 12 feet. On east side of mountain the largest trees are 18 feet high and 8 or 10 inches diameter at 1 ft. I measure one tree about 18 ft. h. and 4 ft 3 in. circ at 1 ft.

Often very heavy with cones in top. I note a tree its crown so densely filled with cones that one cannot see through it -- half as big as a bushel.
