18_160 Red Mt. s.e. Mendocino Co. circa 3000 ft. alt. Chaparral on Red Mountan - Manzanita, is fire-killed but comes up well from seed when very young. It is thus an adaptation to fire or case of nanism - Pickeringia montana, is flowering profusely this year Never saw it more abundant. It fruits very sparingly (C.P.) but it sprouts abundantly after fire, and it will sprout from the roots wherever these are exposed by being uncovered as on a cut or trail |
18_161 June 18, 1908. - Cupressus Sargentii. The whole of Red Mountain is covered with it. On the east slope and north side there is a great grove of trees. On the summit and west slope is an area of young trees on a fire burned area. There young trees are 5 or 6 years old. It is a thin growth but they make an attempt to form cover by developing very long lower branches. The open spaces furnish hunting ground for the bulb-diggers. The growth is 2 to 5 feet high and there are many individuals which fruit at 1 or 2 feet, showing |
