- Carl Purdy says: "Fritillaria, if you want a Fritillaria to flower take one that hasnt flowered. They rest a year. The bulbs with a leaf will flower next year; the third year they rest. [He is now collecting Frit. coccinea on Red Mountain]. The surface is a loose red rock with very little soil. Deer eat the shoots before they flower so that few plants are seen in flower. Deer also eat Lilium rubescens. I have collected 20,000 Lilium pardalinum bulbs
