Went to dinner with Pierce; he has been working a lot on the effects of smelter fumes on vegetation. He regards it as harmful! [That sounds naive to one who has seen the effects as at Keswick but Osterhout [?] says not harmful! O. is retained by the smelters.] At Keswick he remarked that the Poison Oak was not injured, which Platt had told me about some years ago.

- Freak Quercus Douglasii tree on ranch of E. Meader, Fair Oaks. Acorn cups very much enlarged & "hillocky". Leaves small but normal. -- E.B. Babcock brings material to me. Grant Wallace, local naturalist, says four oaks there: White Oak (Quercus Douglasii), Live Oak (Quercus Wislizenii), Black Oak (Quercus Kelloggii), and Swamp Oak (Quercus lobata).

- Quercus agrifolia and tent caterpillars -- clusters can be burned out with a rag saturated with gasoline.
