18_126 Cypress Point to cont. The unsymmetrial trees are of three types: Trees with long lower branches and irregular crowns. Trees without lower branches, or only remnants, the trunks tall, and bearing an irregular but dense flat hat-like crown Trees crouching and building up to seaward a dense wall of foliage. Sometimes a company of such trees will so join on to each other as if they tried to form a high protecting wall for leeward shelter. |
18_127 Pacific Grove, Mar. 6, '08 Buttressed Trees. Monterey Cypress. See back 10 & 13 pp. Trunks may be heavily buttressed as explained, or swollen symmetrically at base (see bottom of page 15 pages back), or they may not be buttressed at all or inappreciably. In the latter case the tree may be sheltered (see bottom page, 19 pp. back) or exposed like a tree in Cypress Point grove which is 40 ft. high, on forefront of ocean, narrow crown, irregular top, dead branches below. Circumference = 6 ft. 7 in. at 4 ft. Not evidently buttressed. |
