Monterey Cypress
Its Form.
Form of the tree little affected by winds save as mechanical stress. At Point Lobos two trees stand side by side. One is a young tree but tall, with slender pointed pyramind-like crown, showing no effects of wind whatsoever. The other tree, less exposed if anything, is an old tree, all battered, with flat-topped crown. The most unsymmetrical trees are those nearest the sea; in protected situations as a rule

one finds the regularly symmetrical pyramidal individuals.
In sheltered woods at Cypress Point I noticed two trees in company of Monterey Pine, remarkable for their open crown, finger-pointed branches, and narrow-pyramidal outline. They were 50 ft. high, and 14 and 15 inches diameter respectively at 2 feet above the ground. Another tree with less open crown but equally symmetrical was 80 feet high and 2 1/4 ft. diam. at 2 feet above the ground.
