18_116 Cypress Point to These board-like structures are evidently in response to wind strain or perhaps more correctly crown strain exerted in the main by the wind and not by the weight of the crown. They are, so far as I observed always with their narrow edge to the wind Size of Cones. The largest cones found were on trees at Point Lobos. They were huge, 2 in. long and nearly globose, being 2 in. diameter from tip to tip of umbos. On same tree were cones only 1 in. long. I saw 2 or 3 of these large cones in a cluster, but the heavy clusters of 30 to 50 consist of cones 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. Good-sized cones were also found on Cypress Pt. |
