- Went with Dr. Abbott to the pine woods west of Monterey, passing through the Presidio, over the ridge and down the western slope, about 2 miles in all. Here we found the Bishop Pines. The soil and general conditions were strongly suggestive of the Mendocino coast Pine Barrens. There is also the dwarf Castanopsis chrysophylla, and low bushes of Ceanothus rigidus and dentatus. Also Arctostaphylos tomentosus. (Dr. E.K. Abbott who went with me, is a graduate of Hillsdale College, Michigan, 1869.)
