17_4 Berkeley [March, 1907] C.H. McCharles, Tustin, Orange Co., Cal. says Juglans Californica grows in Santa Ana Range. The trees are in Breda Canyon on the road from Fullerton to Chino (at about 750 ft. alt. acc. [feet altitude according to] Contour Map). Fire resistance. See Leiberg, For. Cond. 17_5 [Berkeley] March, 1907 Pinus monticola, Platt, Independence Lake, Sept. 1906, Cotyledons, 8,5,7,7,8,7,8. Cupressus macrocarpa, "150 to 200 seeds in a cone, 30% only good. Light-colored ones poorest. Some trees yield better seed than others. Native trees at Monterey poorest, yet have finest largest cones." -Miss Crane, Dec. 12, 1906. Black Oak wood (Californica) poor, brittle. -cont. from p. 37 seq. The old wagon trail up North Fork Lewis Creek which I followed slipped from one side of the creek to the other, that is from Monterey Co. to San Benito, but practically all my collecting was done in Monterey Co., especially on the "headwaters" or easterly branches which are, as to my trail, wholly in Monterey Co. |
