17_2 Vacaville [Feb. 28-Mar. 2, 1907.] No. 2627. Populus Fremonti Wats. Trees along Ulatis Creek in the village in full flower. The aspect of the staminate tree is quite different from that of the pistillate. The erect shoots in the top of the tree have their upper half barren of flowers; these points stick up out of the body of the tree curiously bearing only leaf buds. The aments burst through the winter bud splitting it in half, the scales above and below cohering like one boat-shaped structure and usually falling before the ament (catkin) has matured its anthers. |
17_3 [Vacaville] Feb. 28-Mar. 2, 1907. The aments are maroon red gorgeous when they first appear due to the intense color of the anthers which rapidly lose color as they ripen. Aments 3-4 inches long. The bracts are regularly laciniate-fringed, shorter than the flowers, and fall as soon as the aments elongate and release them (before anthesis). Mar. 1, 1907.
