Otherwise the trees do not differ appreciably. Contorta has noticeably crooked branchlets whence the specific name? or on account of its dwarfed habit on the Oregon sand dunes? Dr. Henry thinks that the terminal bud may grow again in the season, thus rendering the cone lateral instead of subterminal. He has seen examples of this fact in cult. [cultivated] trees. He asks what are the differences in the seeds. I do not recall that I found any differences but will look up my manuscript.

- Was very busy all through May and June at work on Californian types in the Kew Herbarium. It soon came around to my sailing day. I leave England with genuine regret having made many fine friends here with whom I have had many pleasant hours.
