for their portraits as is the case in so many of the old masters. Handekoeter's fowls are in splendid style here, especially his "Floating Feather." Rembrandt's "Elizabeth Bas" and "Jewish Bride" are two more celebrated pictures. Frans Hal's Jovial Toper is in Hals' genial style.
Amsterdam is so cut up with canals that it is very suggestive of Venice. These two cities are the only ones in Europe that have at times baffled my geographical sense.

tried to get to the Hague. I had left on bag at Maas station, but the trains for the Hague leave Delft Poort Station. Well I checked the extra bag to England after some bickering and a good deal of tipping, then went by train to Delft Poort and finally reached the Hague. This city is cleaner than Rotterdam and has some interesting old buildings and churches - but all pretty tame after Italy, France and Belgium. But the Mauritshuis Gallery is very fine - the best thing being by Rembrandt on which they have a "long hand." The
