between Californians and Germans. I am not speaking of the German family, but only of certain broad differences. The German statistics say that every sixth woman is not a pure woman. Another phase of life here: the law is dreadfully severe. The German system is exceedingly thorough; it is somebody's business to do any & every particular thing. It is only when the unexpected happens that the weakness of their system shows itself. A girl faints and falls from the rear of an omnibus. No passerby will touch her. They are afraid. I have been amazed at the carelessness of drivers and cyclists for foot people of every kind and degree and it is passing disagreeable to be shouted at or more often hissed at by the drivers or snarled at, the latter being a common phase of street experience in London.
