Bryant's Dec. 9, 1906.
- Umbellularia Californica, on steep north slope, gorge of West Branch San Pablo Creek beyond Fish Ranch. Sheared off by wind. Several good colonies.
- Madrona - on little shoulders near bas of canyon - Bryant's.
- Black Oak - noticed trees beyond Bryant's.
- Alnus rhombifolia - West Branch San Pablo.

- Heine showed me the Redwood nursery this morning. Seeds and cuttings from Willits. The cuttings from the tops of trees and the suckers from the base both rooted equally well. The suckers being softer wood would

probably have rooted quicker with bottom heat. Heine says cuttings which make trees do not sucker like seedlings.
Cranberry cuttings (Vaccinium ovatum) from Grizzley Peak have set feebly.
- Stachys bullata, see p. 55 ante. The common S. hereabouts develops portions especially terminal portions of its roostocks into tubers. The connecting portions are dying away now. Isolated rootstock portions are in part if not always in this species thickened up and tuber-like - W.H. Berkeley, Dec. 1906. The late winter or fall leaves were very crinkly!!!
