Notley's Landing
Monterey ooast.
- This is a mighty deceiving country as to Tan Oak. You might go from end to end of it without supposing that there was any Tan Oak here except a very occasional tree. You have to get back into the very narrow canyons and there you find it only on one side of the canyon mostly above the Redwood a little. I see it forming small colonies here and there. There is very little stand but the total yield is pretty good. Nevertheless it would never be touched except for water transportation so close at hand. Altho the country is exceedingly abrupt

the mountains plunging straight down into the sea, yet the haul is a fairly short one to any of the "landings". The landings are on an exposed coast, a straight line facing the ocean without protecting headlands.

This bark is the cream of the tanbark industry and it pays to work hard for it.There has been taken thus far:
