Santa Lucia Mts. Chaparral Ridge beyond Cold Spring, Big Sur R.

No. 2591. Pinus coulteri. Needles both from 1st year and 2nd year growth. Tree 16 ft high, 5 in. diameter at 1 ft. cone taken from top of 3rd season's growth. Bark dark, loosening into large thinnish scales. Needs to 9-1/2 inches.

no. 2592. Pinus attenuata. Tree about 20 or 22 years old, at least 210 cones persisting, 45 on one branch, this branch in part taken. Tree 27 ft. high. 9 in. diam. at 1 ft. above ground. Slender tree. Bark smoothish, only slightly roughened. Scattering cones open in 3 to 10 years., i.e., without any uniformity on branches, mostly not opening.

No. 2593. Yucca whipplei. Common near the summits of the balds on the sharp southwest slopes.

- Yellow Pines, 4 - 5 ft. diam. max h. 100 - 150 ft.
- Coulter Pines 30 to 50 ft. h. and 1/2 to 1 ft. through.
- Coulter Pine, 6 ft. 3 in. circ. at 4 ft., irregular network of longitudinal fissures. Foliage yellowish green, not so dark green or bright green as the Yellow Pine.
No. 2585. See back. Trichostema always associated with Turkey Mullein.
- Coulter Pine on very crests of the outside range, overlooking the sea, 2200 ft. altitude, its pale green foliage very marked against bright green of Yellow Pine. Coulter within 100 yds. of Redwood in Ca_on bottom.
