Berkeley, August 9, 1906

- Berkeleyis a congested town, filled with San Francisco refugees; rents are skyhigh; houses no longer to be had; building [rushing]; labor excessively dear.

-The young people of this town invited me to the Country Club Saturday for a dance in my honor. I went. It was a very pleasant relaxation after being away from the society of my countrymen so long.
