15_98 Naples lemon trees were not protected from frost as the trees by the system practiced are rendered increasingly delicate instead of more hardy! About 3/4 the crop exported goes to America, one-fourth to England. Met a party of "Berkeley" people here, Mr. & Mrs. Wright, Miss Anna Florence Brown of Oakland, Miss Moller, ds. [?] -- all U.C. We had a jolly time together back to Naples. Naples is marvelously strange to occidental eyes; its narrow streets, often "graddi" where they go up a hill by steps, its shops for the people, its women carrying tall water-jars on their head, etc. |
15_99 Feb. 20, 1906. The National Museum contains the celebrated Farnese Bull, Farnese Venus, Adonis, Hercules, etc. The collection of Pompeian remains is extensive: Foodstuffs: walnuts, chestnuts, filberts, wheat, barley, dates, figs ("Fichi Secchi") pine nuts ("Pinnochi"), Bread Fruit, Lenticchie, Fave. All were as black as charcoal, in fact were charcoal! The Noci (English Walnuts) were thus prized in Pompeii 1850 years ago. How absurd to call them English Walnuts, all the more in that they do not grow near England. The dates, chestnuts, everything in fact were very natural in appearance -- no mistaking their identity.
