15_8 Kew Herbarium - Bridges, Thos. Went out to Chile to collect, sending his plants to Arnott, Lindley, Bentham but especially W.J. Hooker. In the Hooker Correspondence are found letters as follows: -- Quillota, May 4, 1832 Santiago de Chile, Sep. 3, 1832 Valparaiso, Oct. 25, 1832 Valdivia, Feb. 26, 1833 Valparaiso, Aug. 27, 1833. Also 10 others up to, Apr. 8, 1842. Coquimbo, Nov. 20, 1841. Cochabamba, Apr. 3, 1845 Valparaiso, May 21, 1844. In 1841, June 14, Valparaiso he writes to Hooker and explains his long silence of (about) 8 years by saying that he had sacrificed his time to agriculture with little benefit to |
15_9 Nov. 7, 1905. himself but that he now means to give as much time as possible to Natural History. He collected birds as well as plants. Speaks in words of most cordial gratitude to Sir William Hooker as do all the collectors of that day. The letter from Cochabamba (Bolivia) is published in full in Hooker's London Journal of Botany, vol. 4, pp 571 to 577. -1845- He speaks of Cochabamba as being the most delightful climate that he had ever experienced. He returned to England with Victoria regia, the first to introduce it into European cultivation.
