Pompeii

= It was a beautiful day for Pompeii. We left Naples at 10.00 by train reaching the Pompeii stat at 11.00 where we lunched at the Hotel Suisse, 3 fr. The entrance to old Pompeii is 2 minutes walk away. One knows not how to express his sense of interest in the old city. It was far better preserved than I expected. The city is laid out in a very regular plan, with straight streets. The central point of the plan is the Forum -- a spacious rectangle surrounded by the remains of columns and looked down upon by the Temple of Jupiter at the end. placed diagonally mostly or perhaps always. The sidewalks are well above the street pavement. The streets are mostly 6 or 7 ft wide not including the sidewalks. Of course there are some finer broader streets. The house walls along the street are mainly intact and ordinarily without apertures except doors for shops or residences. The fine residences with their central court with fountain, statues, garden, etc the colonnaded arcades surrounding it, and many rooms opening off it were highly interesting. The House of the Vetti is a remarkable example of a wealthy Pompeians house. Things are in situ. Especially worthy of remembrance were
