15_66 Mentone, France Episcopalian rector. The rooms were magnificently decorated -- the decorations very showy but in keeping with the use to which they are put. I soon tired of it, and came away. Having not a bit of the gambling spirit I was not tempted to play even one coin. Monte Carlo is truly beautiful in its situation on the sea, the Casino crowning a rocky headland. The city is a white and gold city for the most part -- like a great "fair" city -- but its showiness would tire me out if I had to live in it. Then I took train to Mentone |
15_67 Feb. 9, 1906 and after a bit walked out to Sir Thomas Hanbury's place at La Mortola. I met the Curator, Aylwin Berger, on the road and he took me back to the house. I went in, presented my letter of introduction to Sir Thomas who invited me to come the next day and see the garden, take luncheon, etc The garden must have something like 7000 species in it, chiefly exotic succulents, cacti, euphorbias, aloes, etc Berger is especially interested in these -- systematically. Sir Thomas took me on a walk about the garden. At luncheon I met Lady Hanbury, a brother-in-law (or ? son-in-law) of Sir Thomas, Mr. Pease, and a Lady Northcote. Also Sir Thomas' son. |
