At the administrative office I presented my official card, was asked to give my profession, age, etc, hotel in Monte Carlo, asked to show my letter-of-credit, etc. Then I got a yellow slip entitling me to enter the gambling rooms. The greatest crowds were around the roulette table -- five of them running. About an equal number of men and women. Women of all ages and complexions. Women with high-bred manner; women with the hardest faces that I ever saw in well-dressed women. Women with nervous uneasy faces; women with stolid faces, their eyes never wan-

dering to the stranger. Sweet-faced women with soft gray hair about their temples. Women of the loosest character; women of the very opposite kind. Women with young baby faces; women with clean-cut handsome features, serene and calm, their look that of refinement. The men were as various. The "bankers" were the most obvious lot of tough-looking gamblers and black-legs -- as hard as one sees in the gambling hells of Juneau or Williams. The men players were "sports", tourists, business-men out for a stroll, and some, with as clerical an aspect as one could wish to see in a high-church
