15_56 Paris, France at the latter place I enjoyed more than the ancient masters. In the evening I went to the Hermanns for dinner, and afterwards with M. and Madam to the theatre -- a variety performance in which monkeys and seals were made to act like men -- a thing which showed vastly the intelligence of the animals and yet so many of the performances were of such a nature as to seem abusive to the animals and imitations of man's poorest rather than best characteristics. After this came ballets, etc. It was "frenchy" enough I suppose for any one. ---------- = Mr. A. Thellung, is working on Lepidum. |
15_57 Feb. 7, 1906. - Lepidium bipinnatifidum Desv. tyke. One stem of an ascending or suberect plant with spreading branches. Leaves pinnate with broad rachis, as much as 3 cm. long, the lobes incisely toothed on both sides. The raceme is perhaps nearly as dense as the Californian "bipinnatifidum" but does not appear so on account of the much longer outwardly curved pedicels. The pods are notched at apex. A better spm. is the Dimley [?] one mentioned in DC's Systema. Raceme 6 cm. long, subflexuous, pedicels 3 to 4 mm. long. Pods 2.5 mm. long. The rachis is as broad as the lobes into which it passes. Pubescence not obvious to the naked eye. (See bottom of prev. page.) |
