15_38 Kew Herbarium = Douglas, David. Publication of new species, the seed collected by Douglas in California, by Benth. Trans Lond. Hort. Soc. 2 ser. i, 403, with some account of his journeying. This paper deals with some of the most common and beautiful of the Californian herbs and shrubs. There are references to prev. vols as to the sending out of Douglas. ---------- - If a man has made no blunders it is because he hsa done nothing! -- Geo. Bentham. ---------- "Long Valley" -- There is a Long Valley in Plumas Co where Bolander collected teste Gray. Proc. Am. Acad. 7; 330. Maybe Bolander was not in Long Valley, Mendocino, as I have thought. |
15_39 Nov. 20, 1905 = Acer Californicum is of Dietr. not Greene as latter implies in Fl. Fr. - Botta, P.E. -- First collected the California Road Runner; gives a descrip. of it in Ann. Mus. Hist. Nat., 1835, vol. 4. p. 125. Says it exists from Cape St. Lucas to Port of St. Francisco and that the Spanish colonists call it Churea [?]. There is a large and beautiful, colored, double plate of the bird. - Dr. Henry. The plant referred to in Erythea, 6; 123 is Actinotinus sinensis Oliver. Poor Oliver was overwhelmed with confusion when the truth came out says Dr. Henry. It happened just before Henry was leaving China and it was packed without his examining it. |
