Hindsii our most beautiful species, 16-20 ft. circ. being common sizes. Platanus generally branching from the root. "Good collectors or accomplished Botanists resident in the state"? I can say unfortunately, No. Dr. A. Kellogg has described a number of new species but is resident in this city and does not collect to any extent. H.G. Bloomer Esq is an amaetur much interested in Botany but does not collect. A young man has recently arrived, a Mr. Bolander, who I think will collect considerable".

Just before Brewer's departure from California by the Overland Route he writes of his work on the Survey, hardships in the mountains, etc., altitudes of the southern Sierras, Big Trees, (too great expense attaching to getting out a log section to comply with Hooker's request for a section).
Brewer spent the following winter at the Gray Herbarium, at work on the California Plants
