of an early community! Mrs. Perkins liked California; she knew some nice people, Prof. Greene, Dr. Stearns, etc and moreover as California had taken its hold on her as it does on everyone who stays long enough she was unwilling to leave it and died in Berkeley.
Miss Perkins took her Ph.D. at Berlin. She worked at Chicago under Coulter before Coulter had left Lake Forest. Coulter came in once a week. Chamberlain was there. He is a brainy man.

= Eschscholtzia Californica Ch Type. Two sheets. "Legit Chamisso Portum Sancti Francisci Californiae in arenosis A.D. 1817". (de Chamisso)". This label is not the hand of Chamisso. The label of the other sheet "In California leg. d. Chamisso. Chamisso ded. 1820" may be.
Caulescent, the leaves about 3-3.5 cm. long (exc. pet.), divided into linear segments 1/4 to 1 mm. wide, mostly 1/2 mm. wide, 2 to 5 mm. long.
I find it difficult to detect any pubescence on the spurs. At the base of one petiole I discover 3 or 4 short hairs.
