- Went to a meeting of the at the University of Berlin. An ordinary gathering but composed of extraordinary men: Schwendener, stoutish and rather short, white hair, somewhat Quaker-like face; Ascherson, shorter still but chubby like a baby, now quite advanced in years, his eyes peering kindly between the full folds of his cheek and eyebrows; Magnus, looking like the pictures we have of him; Kuy [?], sparer; Harins [?], Diels of the younger set; Koehne, the shrub and tree man; Dammer; Pilger; Loesener;

- A week later went to the meeting in the lecture hall of the Pharmaceutical Institute, of the Society of Botanists of the Province of Brandenburg. Heer Uhl gave a lecture on the Amazon and his explorations there, illustrated by a long series of fine lantern slides. Here I saw Ascherson again, Urban, Fedde, and many others. After the meeting they foregathered for supper, as is their custom, at the Schoss Restaurant. This is in the neighborhood of the new Botanic Garden. Hieronomus was present at the meeting. He has a kindly eye, full shortish beard sprinkled with gray, a high forehead with a small but conspicuous wen on one temple. Lindau presided.
