15_144 Schaffhausen to The Rhine Falls are at Neu-hausen. The Guide-book says they are the largest in Europe. I tried hard to appreciate them but not very successfully. Not nearly so picturesque as the Yosemite Falls and not to be compared with either the Nevada or Vernal. Too much like a cataract; too little like a true fall -- but quite huge after all. Schaffhausen is a quaint old town. I saw but little of it. Slept there the night. The Minster tower long held the bell which inspired Schiller's Leid von der Glocke and which is now kept in the cloisters. |
15_145 Stuttgart, Mar. 22, '06 On the way to Stuttgart crossed and recrossed the Danube which is here a small stream. Passed numerous German villages. The houses are big, rather barn-like, often much decorated on the outside, often with wood beams alternating with panels of stucco, etc, "Stratford-like". These towns looked very clean and orderly. Passed through the edges of the Black Forest. The country here is much wooded altho I saw nothing that looked like old forests. The forests were all tended. Clean fellings showed patches of young spruce, etc the young trees in regular rows like a vegetable garden. |
