15_136 Lugano carrying candles; others also carrying candles, the women chanting, the boys chanting, the voice of the priest rising above the others at intervals. I saw a young man, with the typical burden basket of the region [see image for drawing] something like that, carrying basket loads of manure into a vine yard on his back. It is typical, such an incident, of the cheapness of labor. I saw a tower built above an arch over a road and many such interesting things. There is no waste of land space by scattering buildings. 15_137 March 17, 1906 exceedingly compact masses, sharply defined all around. We were rowed across the Como lake to the Villa Carlotta where we saw Canova's statues, Cupid and Psyche, and Also friezes by Thorwaldsen. The garden was shown us quite thoroughly -- a fine collection of trees, mostly such as we grow in the open in Calif. They had a Sequoia gig. 40 ft. h. The gardenere [?] called it Wellingtonia. Fine Rhododendros, Azales, Aucuba Japonica, a fine Cryptomeria elegans -- the garden form. Stopped at Lugano. Splendid views up the lake and of the fine mountains set around the town.
