15_128 Padua, Italy being able to speak French; as for Italian I could neither read nor speak it but that was not to be expected. Had some difficulty in getting into the place; Saccardo for some reason was not to be had; but "Dott. G.B. Traverso, Libero Docente di Botanica, Assistente nell'Instituto Botanica della R. Universita, Padova" was very kind and showed me the garden and collections. They have some very old trees. The Goethe Palm humilis) has numerous branches and is far from "humilis" being 30 ft. tall as I remember. The oldest tree in the garden is a Vitex Agrius-Castus [?] |
15_129 March 12, 1906. from 1550. It is interesting that most of the trees have on the label the date of planting. They had a very good specimen 35 or 40 ft. h. of Cupressus MacNabiana. Their Norfolk Island Pine was housed in the range of greenhouses. As it grew they built an octagonal tower for it which is now 50 or more ft. high. It is a fine tree but indicates that the climate of Pisa is severer than California at the same altitude. I told Doctor Traverso that they would have a Pisa Campanile by and by.
