being able to speak French; as for Italian I could neither read nor speak it but that was not to be expected. from 1550. It is interesting that most of the trees have on the label the date of planting. They had a very good specimen 35 or 40 ft. h. of Cupressus MacNabiana. Their Norfolk Island Pine was housed in the range of greenhouses. As it grew they built an octagonal tower for it which is now 50 or more ft. high. It is a fine tree but indicates that the climate of Pisa is severer than California at the same altitude. I told Doctor Traverso that they would have a Pisa Campanile by and by.
