15_126 Venice, Italy. bought a box for 4.00 L. We paid 2 francs (inc. tip) each way for the gondola. Therefore for three of us the opera cost, 12:50 L. Exceedingly cheap! We might have walked to the theatre but it was a rare sensation going up to the theatre step in a gondola and gong home with the full moon in the high sky, the tall white palaces rising out of the water and the boatmen's cry at the corners. Visited the Academia di Belli Arti but was not much impressed, altho the time was too short At St. Mark's I heard a priest preach. Altho I understood no word that he said it was a pleasure to listen to him on account of his earnest incisive convincing speech, most clearly and dispassionately delivered. In the cathedral at Milan I heard a priest; his appeal was to the emotions and he was plainly of inferior intellectual stature. Went on to Padua on Sunday March 12. It is a quaint old town with colonnaded pavements nearly everywhere. I was most interested in the Botanic Garden which is the oldest in Europe. Italy has a great many botanic garden. Each kingdom or province before the days of unification thought it must have a botanic garden. I felt humiliated at not |
