15_124 Venice, Italy Went to Mirano to see the glass industry -- in a gondola -- the waters of the lagoons lying smooth and shimmery in the sun, a slight haze, a warm day, the towns rising out of the water, white flocks of water-fowl resting on the water. Lace manufactories galore. We were constantly greeted with: "You like to see the lace-making. 150 girls make the lace". In its trade aspects Venice is a cheap circus town. The idea of the "Midway Plaisance" in our fairs in the U.S. is taken from a town with strong Oriental features like Venice. You "trade", i.e. bargain for everything. But its canals are a delight. We went to the Teatro Rossini and heard Il Trovatore with a corp of splendid voices and a fine orchestra of 50 pieces. It was glorious. I can't say too much for the stars or the chorous. Everyone pays 1.50 L. to get in. Then you stand or buy an orchestra seat or a box. We |
