14_6 Camabridge University - Left Liverpool Station, London, last night at 8:20 for Cambridge, in company with Mr. Robinson, Editor of Sylva and Flora. Arr. at C. at 9:42 and went to the Bull Hotel. It was cold, the thermometer going lower last night than for 60 years past in October. British hotels are never (or seldom) warm, the two small fires being already fronted by visitors, so we went out for a walk along Trumpington street and saw the fine old gray buildings in the moonlight, Corpus Christi College, King's College, the fine classical front of the FitzWilliam Museum. Then back to bed to get warm - the maid bringing me a pitcher |
14_7 Oct. 16, 1905. of hot water - in this way I took the chill off my "frozen" hands and feet. Frozen = typical Am. exaggeration. The Bull is really a fine country inn and very interesting it is with its old pictures - but no "comforts" in the American sense. Next morning we had breakfast at 7:30, poached eggs and fried ham and marmalade (2 s 6 d but scarcely as good as the 1 s 6 d breakfast at the temperance hotel in Edinburgh where I stayed). Then after another glance at the buildings hereabouts, to the Botanic Garden. At last we chanced upon Lynch accompanied by Prof. Hughes (Geology).
