14_56 Lond. Hort. Soc. of Colonel Fremont with 200 riflemen on the 25th of October dispelled all fear of the attack that had been contemplated for some time. "With the beginnings of November," etc The above extracts are from a fragment of his journal laid in loosely in the back of a bound MSS volume of "Hartweg, California, Nol. 1. [For referencs to Hartweg's travels in Equatorial America see Index, Trans. Hort. Soc. 2d ser. Vol. 3.] It seems to me that there must be a "Hartweg, California, Vol. 2", altho the Librarian cannot find it. Even if the journal were not returned by the printer his Californina accounts should be there - statements of expenditures (just as from Mexico) which would throw light on his exact movements in California. The librarian, Mr. Hutchinson, has been bery obliging and helpful but thinks it may have been destroyed. Mr. E. G. Baker say Lord Avebury (Sir John Lubbock) is an eminent financier. I myself had noticed that he was contributing financial articles to the Times bearing on the Free-Trade vs Protection [country] now raging. He is an out-and-out Cobdeuite. Baker says he is a successful banker and very wealthy. You musn't think he |
