The above extracts are from a fragment of his journal laid in loosely in the back of a bound MSS volume of "Hartweg, California, Nol. 1.

It seems to me that there must be a "Hartweg, California, Vol. 2", altho the Librarian cannot find it. The vol. 1. contains but two letters from California, the rest being Mexican or instructions from the officers

of the society. Even if the journal were not returned by the printer his Californina accounts should be there - statements of expenditures (just as from Mexico) which would throw light on his exact movements in California.
The librarian, Mr. Hutchinson, has been bery obliging and helpful but thinks it may have been destroyed.

Mr. E. G. Baker say Lord Avebury (Sir John Lubbock) is an eminent financier.
