14_50 London Hort. Soc. ride of forty-eight miles under a boiling hot sun. The news here were to the same effect as already stated, 200 Wallawallas were said to be encamped 20 miles above Sutter's Fort and the main body a thousand strong higer up in the valley. The town of Sonoma, distant a hundred miles from the fort, and consisting of a large square with a row of houses on two sides of it, was put in a state of defence, and [gaured] by a few marines and sailors sent over from Yerba Buena.
