His letters from Mexico (Guanaxuato, Leon, Aguas Calientes, San Luis Potosi, Bolanos, Real del Monte, Guatemala) and S. America (Lima, Quito, etc.). There are 72 letters in vol. 1 beginning with No. 1 "On board the Montezuma, Liverpool, Oct. 6, 1836, the day of sailing and ending with No. 72, Bogota, Mar. 31, 1843.
The printed journal in Journ. Lond. Hort. Soc. vols 1 - 3 leaves out the South American trip entirely
Writing from Monterey July 28, 1846 he says: " I shall leave this place from the River Sac-

Extracts from his MSS Journal. xxx "Early the following morning we were joined at the Mission of San Rafael by General Vallejo," who brought the intelligence that twelve hundred Walla Walla Indians from Oregon had arrived in the Sacramento Valley and sent a message to Sutter's Fort demanding the cattle due to them and that the person of a Mr. Cook be given up to them unconditionally. This arose from a quarrel about a mule in the autumn of 1844, when those Indians were encamped
