14_40 Kew, Surrey Talked about Jordans's work on Draba and the 300 species which he made. Cult the plants from seeds taken from preserved specimens and if the garden plant preserved the character of the parent it was a good species. Says only one of the species has been accepted by good systematists. There are, similarly, so many Crataegi that they can no longer be remembered or recognized. They depend upon, in part, color characters of the stamens which vanish in the dried specimen and which [therefore] renders the species indeterminable. 14_41 Nov. 28, 1905. Major Prain is a tall somewhat bony type with strong facial features, thick hair above bare temples, brown eyes, and a kindly manner. He thought Professor Greene a most charming person (which he is, esp. when social) and he evidently could not have welcomed a suggestion that Greene as Miss Eastwood made species for the sake of making them or having their name after them. - Wislizenius [sic], A., M.
