14_38 Kew, Surrey - Met Major D. Prain, Superintendent of the Calcutta Botanical Garden at Sibpur. He is working for some time at the Herbarium. Went to the Vienna Botanical Congress and spoke most pleasantly of all the Americans, that they were a charming lot of men, quite divided into 2 camps but most friendly in their hostility. Said Britton was taking a modern book as the beginnings of nomenclature - say Index Kewensis, not go back of that, proposed Mr. Britton! Prain remarked the comparatively small number of names which would differ by the various codes and thought it ought to be possible for each group to give up say 20 names of the least importance to them. 14_39 Nov. 28, 1905 - Called this afternoon on Mr. G. Nicholson, author of the Gardener's Dictionary and formerly Curator of the Kew Gardens. He is one of the most pleasant and agreeable men that I have met in England. Spoke most appreciatively of John Muir and seemed to understand him. Said many people of the Eastern States spoke of John Muir as the greatest liar! That was to me a novel charge! Was a traveling companion of Muir, Sargent and Son on the continent a year ago June and found Muir everyway pleasant and worthy of confidence. Remarked Sargent's mania for Crataegus; thought it all the more remarkable in that Sargent was so hard to convince as to the existence of 3 Benthamian species of Ulmus, ie. not Jordan species. |
