Sunningdale.
= On invitation from Sir Joseph Hooker went today to his home, The Camp, Sunningdale, for luncheon. Sir Joseph had written me that I should meet Lord Avebury at the station. So I picked out Avebury and we got into the carriage Sir Joseph had sent for us and drove to the camp. We were received by Sir Joseph and Lady Hooker and at once I felt at home, so cordial was their welcome. Their home while not large or grand is very comfortable and quietly elegant. Lady Hooker is very much younger (say 60 years of age) than Sir Joseph who is 89 years young. He is remarkably hale and well preserved for his

years, has the stong frame and strong features of the old-fashioned pioneer gentlemen that I knew as a child in California, bushy Scottish beard, smooth shaven upper lip and chin, marvelously shaggy eyebrows, and a most pleasant child-like smile when something tickles his fancy. He has been a hard worker all his life, systematic in the disposal of his time and abhors wasting time.
