blazes to get along. If you didn't you were a mere loafer about the Etna saloons. Jimmie never ceased to marvel about Sampson who is really a gentleman of leisure and carries the ear-marks of the breed.
The day west from "Packers Mt." was a thunder and rain storm day. The animals were frightened at the storm playing about us on the high mt. and gave us some trouble. It was also wet and uncomfortable because the high brush lapped the trail. But we got down into a little hollow "Cudahay Valley" - a low stretch of brush-covered hollow but if I remember definite enough altho not of great extent as I remember - got up a shelter and made ouselves comfortable. the next morning overslept. I let him sleep and went out to look for the animals. When Jimmie awoke he was quite astonished and wanted to know why he hadn't been called. He was told it was all right but he was evidently suspicious for it was totally out of his experience to be favored in that way out of kindness. However he soon realized that we felt a genuine kindness for him. Later Jimmie came to the Univ. of California as a student in law! and is doing well.
