It is one of many stories which she tells and is of no moment except that all of them taken together throw light on her publications in Zoe - Aug. 29, 1912. - Brewer, W. H. I always considered it remarkable that a man who had botanized four years in California at a time when it was a glorious park and flower garden should have lost so completely his interest in botany after leaving Calif., or at least Californian botany. 14_181 1912. that. When I saw Brewer at New Haven in 1896 he said to me: "Make your manual cover all the Pacific States; it is just as easy to do the whole thing." In a way this was good advice but my feeling was and is still that Brewer had really little conception of the vast nature of the job if it were to be well done, in spite of his Califormia field work. I was then working on my Flora of Western Middle Cal. a small portion of only one of the states he proposed including in one book.
