_ A man at the St. Claire, the swell bachelor's club in San Jose, jumped to his feet and exclaimed to those around "Be calm", when the great earthquake of 1906 came! But there was a young Catholic priets who sensed that this was no usual thing like a great conflagration or a great flood and said with decision: "Calm be damned: Better get on your knees and pray" - This is a sure enough story told me by Miss Rowena Beans.
