- Went to call on the Becks in Holland Road. Conrad Beck told a good story of the Boer War times, illustrating the steadying influences of trade relations in keeping peace. At that time German papers spoke of the English with great bitterness. German salesmen in England, however, fround the doors closed in their faces. One young fellow told Beck that a big house said to him: No, we won't order anything more. What are you telling all these lies about our soldiers." Then there was a meeting of German manufacturers in Berlin and the newspapers were called off. Beck says the English Navy is
