- I can never bcome reconciled to the lower grades of humanity in London, their poverty and their confined ways of living. On Whit Monday 100,000 of them poured into Kew Gardens. There was scarcely a fine looking type amongst them but the lame, the halt, the disfigured, the misshapen, the bleary eyed, the sunken cheeked, the dissipated, the deformed, the crippled, the bodies uncared for from birth to adult stage. - nearly all poorly clad, most even slovenly it not actually dirty. And the coster mongers with ther carts and wares to sell and food to eat
