14_132 Kew herbarium first mention of Rhamnus crocea. He also mentions Yedra [Rhus diversiloba] and its peculiar properties - p. 406 - This seems the first mention of this shrub. On the same page he speaks of the "cherry tree" (probably Prunus ilicifolia) and "gooseberry bush"; also a "gaudy flowered currant bush" = Ribes sanguineum. This first visit was made in Dec. 1826; the second short stay in Oct. - Nov. 1827. April 22, 1827, an earthquake greatly alarmed the Presidio of San Francsico - vol. 2, p 583. |
14_133 June 1, 1906. This day I went into London and called at Meredith Bros in Rood Lane, Cheapside. They are, of course, businessmen, living their lives in the heart of London, E. C. I told Mr. Meredith in a very few words the object of my visit to Europe in response to his inquiry and he manifested further curiosity as I explained why I was working on Californina plants in England. "But what is it all for? said he. What is it worth? What is its monetary value?" I explained to him that there was no money in it. At this he mainifested still further astonishment. "I cant understand it. Why its utterly beyond me. If ther was money in it I could understand it. I hope you'll pardon my being rude, but really, you know, I cant grasp |
