14_128 Kew Herbarium Seeman's Herald Voyage "On the banks of the Sacramento and San Joaquin there is much fine land, but not equal to the speculator's hopes" - Seeman's "Narrative of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Herald", p. 114. They were in S. F. Bay Sept. 18 - 22, 1846. Monterey, Sept. 22. San Diego, Sept. 27(?); Coronadas, San Clemente and San Nicholas were "surveyed", then on south to San Martin and San Quintin, etc. Seeman does not praise San Francisco harbor. Farnham, Travels in the western praries, mentions "great pines of the Umpqua", II, 245, and (with great praise) Wyeth, II, 94. |
14_129 May 20, 1906 Belcher's Voyage. =Belcher touched at Fort Ross (little Russia) the end of Sept. 1839. He gives, Voy.[Voyage] round the World, i, 314, an interesting account of the Russian establishments at Ross and Bodega, and of the rancho half-way between where grain was raised. Bodega Bay = Tomales Bay! The settlement was on the northern side at a small creek or estuary. Visited S. F. again, at Monterey Oct. 5. Santa Barbara, Oct. 9, San Pedro, Oct. 11, San Juan Bay, Oct. 13, San Diego, Oct. 17, thence on down the peninsula, his ships the Sulphur and Starling.
