xxx I am now more feeble and slow in my movements - my days of journeying are at an end - I have seen the last I must see of America - my walking and botanizing are almost over, and now I am content to be at rest. Old age has overtaken me, and I must be content to submit to the laws of nature, wh. none can evade - Jun 4, 1857. Nutgrove near Rainhill.
- July 25, 1857, he writes a very short note: " my principal herbarium is left at the Acad. Nat. Sciences of Philadelphia."
