near the sandy seashore at St. Diego, in Upper California there flowering in April ad May. from some seeds in the dried specimen the present plant has been raised but it has only now flowered in the second summer from germinating as I find it impossible to propagate in any way. it neither takes from cuttings nor layers ad it will not I think produce seeds. it is remarkably glutinous ad produces handsome rose purple flowers with deep yellow anthers. the seed vessel from the dried specimen is sent with it. Are you previously acquainted with and if so what may it be? Yours truly Thos. Nuttall. [l.c.p. 346]

[l.c.p. 347 reference by Nuttall to Gambel, saying the latter had written recently form coast of Peru. Letter dated Feb. 25, 1845, Sutton nr. Rainhill]
[l.c.p. 349. says Gambel has arrived at Boston, having doubled Cape Horn. dated Sept. 2d, 1845.]
Also that he has just returned from a ramble in his native hills of Yorkshire.]
