14_105 May 20, 1906 the former I should say that the interior is yet unknown 20 mls. from the sea coast and Douglas never went as far as St. Diego whence I embarked, A degree further south the country is a dry desert, but not the less interesting to the botanist as I am assured it abounds with Cacti, etc. The Cactus described to you by Wm McDonald is wholly unknown to me it approaches the Californian [sp?_ but that has no proper bonnet and yellowish-green flowers succeeded by edible berries of a greenish color like gooseberries.
